Biography

Dr Sana R. Chaudhry is a writer, award-winning translator, and educator. Hailing from Pakistan and having completed her masters in Florida, USA and her PhD in York, UK, Sana is currently editing her forthcoming book with Clemson University Press, USA. Her bilingual and interdisciplinary work focuses on Urdu writers from South Asia and their representations of trauma and muteness in the wake of Partition violence. She recently won the Jawad Memorial Prize for Urdu-English Translation 2022-23. Her first translation of French Urdu author Julien Columeau’s novelette “Kamran Ali Khan Qawwal” chronicles the life of a musical legend and was published in The Aleph Review.

Current Projects

Her book Writing Trauma: The Politics of Mute Speech in the Urdu Short Story is an urgent creative project that foregrounds the Urdu short story as a literary manifestation and exploration of collective cultural trauma, unspeakability, and the fraught historical (post)memory of Partition from South Asia. It is a work of memory that introduces scholars, critics, and readers to the profound accents and thematics of silence and muteness in Urdu literature.
